Dressing for A Successful Portrait Session

Memorable portraits take careful planning, and the clothing that you select is very important to the success of your session. These guidelines will help you make important decisions about the clothing and style of your portrait.

The goal of the photographer is to direct the viewer’s eye to the face or faces in the portrait. All other elements should be secondary. For individuals, simple long sleeve garments in medium to dark tones of brown, gray, burgundy, green or blue are good pleasing choices when photographed on a medium or dark portrait background. Solid color clothing photographs better than prints, plaids or stripes. Avoid sleeveless and spaghetti tops.

Clothing for small groups or couples should be simple and within the same tonal ranges. When subjects appear in a mixture of light and dark there is a visual confusion. Light colors come forward and dark colors recede. When this happens one person becomes dominate and appears heavier in the portrait.

In a family group, proper clothing and coordination is critical. Choose clothing in the same tonal ranges so that no single family member stands out because the clothing is too light or bright as compared to the rest of the group. Consider where the portrait will be displayed and consider coordinating your clothing to the drapes, wall, carpet and furniture.

Casual clothing compliments portraits made in the outdoors. In this event coordination is still just as important.

Do not try new hairstyles just for your session, and have your hair cut no closer than a week before your scheduled session. Men please shave and trim beards prior to you session.

Minor facial retouching is included however tan lines and hair retouching will incur additional charges. Five o’clock shadow can not be corrected.

Problems with glasses can lead to extra retouching cost. We can remove some glare but tinted lens can not be lightened even with artwork. If your lens is tinted or exceptionally thick you should ask your optometrist for a pair of empty frames for your session.

Ladies, both fresh and natural evening make up photograph well. Double check you nail polish and hair prior to your session.
